Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What guides Gavin’s supervision services?
Gavin views supervision as a crucial space for professional growth and development. He tailors supervision to match the professional's stage of career, as well as their current level of knowledge and experience in the field. His approach is centred on reflective practice, allowing supervisees to critically evaluate their experiences and enhance their self-awareness.
By providing constructive feedback in a supportive environment, Gavin helps Psychologists identify their strengths and areas for improvement. This fosters a culture of "continuous learning" (Code Section 7.3) encouraging psychologists to adapt and refine their competencies and skills effectively over time.
3. Does supervision support the psychologist's own well-being?
Yes. Gavin recognizes that psychology can be demanding. Supervision reduces the risk of burnout by providing a dedicated space for therapists to process their own feelings and experiences.
This aligns with Principle 9 of the AHPRA Code of Conduct, which obliges psychologists to take reasonable steps to prevent circumstances where their professionalism and competence is impaired. Therefore, by engaging in this reflective process, Gavin helps supervisees maintain their own health so they can continue to provide safe, ethical care.
4. What guides Gavin’s supervision services?
Supervision services at Daily Growth Psychology align with Principle 10 of the AHPRA Code of Conduct, which emphasizes developing the psychology workforce. Gavin aims to model professional and ethical behavior while maintaining appropriate boundaries. He accepts responsibility for overseeing service-related behavior and providing guidance at the standard reasonably expected of a Board Approved Supervisor.
As an Educational and Developmental Psychologist, Gavin is uniquely placed to support individuals across the lifespan, and the challenges they face during key transitions (e.g. social skills, school, adulthood, workplace, personal and professional relationships, disability, neurodivergence, grief, loss, cultural stigma etc). His additional training and knowledge within the intersection of education and development in particular can guide those experiencing similar challenges in their competencies and practice.
Why is there a lower rate for self-funded supervisees?
We recognize the power imbalance in the profession and the financial pressure on early-career psychologists. By offering a Community Rate ($160) for self-funded supervisees, we aim to support the profession's sustainability and ensure equitable access to quality supervision. This rate is further reduced by $20 for each successful peer referral who also accesses supervision from us.
6. Can I use supervision to discuss ethical dilemmas?
Absolutely. Supervision is the primary forum for maintaining ethical standards. It allows for the discussion of complex scenarios—such as boundary issues or risk management—ensuring that your practice remains consistent with the AHPRA Code of Conduct. Gavin provides the guidance needed to navigate these "challenging cases" safely using best practice ethical decision-making framework.
Given the updated guidelines, please make your best attempt to ensure you obtain the informed consent of your client before discussing their case during supervision. If however, there are risk or safety-related concerns, then you can discuss this regardless of whether you have your client's expressed and informed consent.
